Paintless Dent Repair - Is it For You?

Paintless dent repair training is a difficult endeavor.

Learning paintless dent repair is difficult. Even after several weeks of training and several months of practicing you may not be capable of paintless dent removal (PDR). My own training consisted of a session of direct interaction with my trainer, then a week of practice. This cycle continued for several months. Even after this, training tends to continue for YEARS. The PDR industry allows for continual learning if you desire to do so. I have been a door-ding tech for 14 years, and last week some hail techs showed me a few techniques that improved my abilities.

Most individuals go to one of several training centers throughout the US to train. Training sessions last anywhere from 3 days to several weeks. I personally know about 2 dozen people who have been trained. None of those that succeeded did so within the first month after they finished their training. Usually it was 3-6 months later that they started seeing progress to the point they believed that PDR was for them. I know a lot of people who have quit PDR, because of it's difficult nature.

Here's a list of qualities you should possess before you start training:

  1. 20/20 correctable vision.
  2. Tenacity.
  3. Patience.
  4. Great hand-eye coordination.
  5. Physically capable of bending over frequently.

Certainly there are several more you could possess, but those cover a lot of the basic needs before you train.

So what's to gain by learning PDR?

Learning PDR with accomplish many things for you, but those things depend upon the variables in place in your life.

Income can increase tremendously. I started in PDR making no more than $25,000 a year. This month, I met some hail techs who will generate at least $350,000 in income. My personal income will be above $100k this year. Not bad for a non-college grad.

Freedom from a boss. I don't have a "BOSS" in the conventional way. Yet, I do have several of them with all my dealerships and body shops I cover in my route. I also have a wife....

Less time at work. I seldom work more than fifty hours a week. I do not have to work weekends. You see the trend.

Move forward with you decision to train in PDR. There are enough reasons to start training as soon as possible. Next week I will discuss costs associated with PDR, including initial training. Have a great week!

Tricks For Making a Small Bathroom Look Larger

Do you have a small bathroom? Short of knocking all the walls down to make space, which will create a real home improvement nightmare scenario, there are much simpler solutions. You can use a few clever interior design tricks to making your bathroom seem bigger than it is, and make the most of your space. This will make you bathroom feel like a whole new beautiful space, which is usually the point of most home improvement endeavors.

Tip #1: Get a corner bathtub. If you have a small bathroom with a freestanding bathtub or even standard bathtub that is built into the wall, you are wasting space my friend! Corner bathtubs are designed specifically to fit in the corner of you bathroom, which will save you valuable floor space. To make your bathroom seem bigger, the key is opening up the floor space so that you're not turning around from the sink and finding yourself half in the bathtub. A corner bathtub will take up much less space than that freestanding bathtub, and you'll be amazed at how this one trick can make your bathroom seem bigger.

Tip #2: Get a corner bathroom vanity. If you can't fit a corner bathtub in or that doesn't work for your floor design, there are bathroom vanities designed to fit specifically in corners. A vanity can take up a lot of room if it's placed right in the middle of your bathroom, and if you get one designed for the corner, it will open up some very valuable wall and floor space. You can use this space for other things or keep it open, and your bathroom will feel so much larger!

Tip#3: Keep things organized and out of sight. If you have a small bathroom, a common problem you probably have is that it is cluttered with toiletries and necessities, because you simply have no place to put them. If you open up your floor and wall space with a corner tub or vanity, you can utilize this extra space with a nice slim linen cabinet. This linen cabinet will give you a lot of storage space to put everything away, so you can clear your countertop, floors and any other cluttered stacking you have going on in there. Nothing makes a room look smaller than clutter and stuff all over the place, so one of the best ways to make your bathroom look bigger is to keep it clean and tidy, and have somewhere to tuck all your necessities away out of sight.

Plan For a Kitchen Remodeling

This Deciding to remodel or renovate your kitchen is one of the best investments you can make.Even if you're not planning to move anytime soon, a kitchen renovation is a great project to undertake.

To start out with, decide what kind of kitchen you want, modern or traditional, L-shaped or U-shaped. Everybody knows that making home renovations beautifies the home and adds to its usefulness. A successful kitchen renovation is not simply a matter of selecting the right paint colour or a wallpaper design. Decide where you want the sink, the work counter and the refrigerator. When you think of how you can update the look of your kitchen without much money, what you should do first is take the time to write down all the improvements you have in mind for your new kitchen, cooking is a big part, but if your family likes to hang out and do homework in the kitchen, you might want to add a breakfast nook or storage benches to your plan.

Regardless of what route, a homeowner needs to first sketch out some kitchen remodeling ideas to ensure the kitchen design and costs will meet their targeted functional requirements and budget. In an ideal kitchen, room size is of lesser importance. Instead, the key is the efficient use of space. Dismantle and remove the existing kitchen appliances, cabinets, benchtops, splashbacks, light fittings, sinks, taps, finishes and floor coverings.

A kitchen renovation project is a complicated undertaking. The complexity involved can create stress, inconvenience and expense in attempting to manage such a project. establishing your purpose for the renovation and deciding upon floor plan design, you will need a materials list to get a better idea of project needs and costs.

10 Kitchen Gadgets You Can't Live Without

No matter whether you've got a stylish bachelor pad, a country farmhouse or any other type of then you'll no doubt spend some time in the kitchen.

Here are 10 of the most essential kitchen accessories.

1. A good corkscrew perhaps with a bottle opener on, doesn't have to cost a fortune, but it does have to be reliable and put back in the right place. There's nothing worse than trying to open a bottle of wine with no corkscrew!

2. A good tin opener will again be reliable and easy to use. You may prefer to use an electric tin opener, and these can be invaluable for those with limited mobility.

3. A steamer helps to ensure that your vegetables retain as much of their goodness, and vitamins as possible. If your vegetables usually end up as tasteless mush, then a steamer will help you to produce crunchy colourful vegetables that taste as nature intended them to.

4. If you are a coffee drinker, then you'll appreciate the importance of a coffee machine. Instant coffee may be easier and quicker, but it doesn't taste anything like as good as freshly made coffee. You can also experiment with coffees from all over the world to find your favourite.

5. If you're a tea drinker, then why let the coffee drinkers have all the fun? Different types of loose teas such as green tea and black tea need brewing for different lengths of time at different water temperatures to make the best cup of tea. A tea machine will take the guesswork out of tea making, and provide you with a cup of your favourite loose tea every time.

6. Good pans are worth the investment if you intend to cook regularly. Expensive pans may not seem to offer anything different to cheaper pans, but the better the pan, the more efficient it will be. In the case of frying pans, a better pan will need less oil, meaning that the food you fry will be better for you.

7. A set of good knives is a worthwhile investment too. You may not understand why one knife is so much more expensive than the other. It's only when you use a better or more expensive knife that you realise that there really is a difference. A good knife will sit well in the hand, and stay sharp for much longer than a lesser knife. For some culinary tasks, being accurate with a knife is vital, so treat yourself to a good set of knives.

8. Accurate scales are important to ensure that quantities are right in recipes. Digital scales are the most accurate, but some people prefer the look and feel of traditional style scales that you need to put the weights on to balance the scales.

9. Nice glasses aren't just for show. While the free glasses you got with some petrol years ago might be fine for soft drinks, you won't want to drink nice wine or cocktails from them. Glasses don't have to be too expensive, and only you will know how much use you will get from them.

10. A vegetable rack is a permanent reminder of what vegetables you've already eaten, and so need to replace. Also, you will have no excuse for not eating your five portions a day if you keep your vegetables on a rack.

If you've moving house, doing up the kitchen, or looking to replace some old kitchenware, why not try out some of these gadgets and accessories?

Discover why the Fine T Tea Machine is becoming such a popular kitchen gadget and choose from a wide range of Gourmet Teas to go with it, at Fine-T.co.uk

Home Safety For Seniors

'Tis the season for slips and falls! Icy sidewalks, snowy paths..... and inside the house?

Here is a check list of safety precautions for the older members of the family. If your frail elderly mother is moving in with you, or Grandad is coming to stay it is a good idea to go through the house and check for hazards and add a few safety features before they come.

Front path and steps

  • Make sure that the paths to the house are even, no major cracks, roots or rocks.
  • Keep steps and paths clear of snow and ice.
  • Check the stairs - no holes or uneven concrete.
  • Hand rails, both sides if possible.
  • Path and front entrance well lit. Movement-detector lights work well.

Entrance, Hallways and Stairs

  • Declutter - make sure that shoes are put away and outdoor clothes hung up. If there are children, teach them to put their toys away.
  • Lighting - halls and stairs should be well lit. A night light in the hall between bedroom and bathroom is vital.
  • Take up any loose mats that could be a tripping hazard.
  • Check that stair rails are secure.

Bedrooms

  • No loose mats or rugs
  • Make room around the bed, especially if your elderly Mom or Dad uses a walker.
  • Have an easy to reach lamp by the bed. If it is awkward to reach the lamp, a sound activated ("clap-on - clap-off") lamp will help.
  • A phone beside the bed.
  • For folks stiff with arthritis or others who may feel light-headed when they first stand up, a bed assist handle is a great help in preventing falls.
  • Again, keep the area around the bed as clutter-free as possible.

Bathroom

  • Where possible install wall bars at the end (tap end) of the bathtub and one on the far wall. A wall bar beside the toilet may also help.
  • Some all in one piece, preformed tub surrounds should not have wall bars added. Clamp-on tub grips, or a floor-to-ceiling pole next to the tub can be used.
  • Use non-slip mats in the tub or shower.
  • A tub or shower stool is useful for those with poor balance.
  • Any medications should be clearly marked. A dosette or blister pack will make it easy to keep track that the medications are taken as prescribed.

Living Room

  • Remove loose rugs and mats
  • Make sure that there is room for a walker if one is used - coffee tables often have to be moved out of the way.
  • Avoid rocking/swivelling chairs
  • Loose electrical cords are a tripping hazard. Route them away from traffic areas where possible, or use duct tape to fix them to the floor.
  • A portable telephone is safer than a fixed phone. Many falls occur when people are rushing to answer the phone. Keep the handset nearby at all times, putting it back in its charger beside the bed overnight.
  • Have good lighting, easy to reach switches.

Kitchen

  • Make sure that essential utensils are easy to reach
  • Use a sturdy step stool to reach higher cupboards
  • Have a smoke alarm and be sure to check the batteries regularly
  • If your older person has fairly severe memory loss, it may be necessary to limit their cooking or even unplug the stove.
  • See that any spills are quickly wiped up.

This may all seem quite overwhelming, but most homes need only a few adjustments. After all, some simple precautions could save a broken hip or worse.

Dallas Luxury Neighorhoods - DFW Executive Homes

The top five upscale neighborhoods in Dallas, Texas are not really debatable. Everyone knows, where the hoighty toighty dwell: Highland Park, University Park, Preston Hollow, Turtle Creek and Kessler Park. These areas are hard to get into, and filled to brim with politics, politics, politics. So, if you're game for playing with the rich and sometimes famous of Big "D," put on designer duds, squash your big hair (that's so--yesterday), and don your fake smile for life in the pristine communities of Dallas, where old money rules.

Highland Park - Officially part of the Park Cities, which encompasses Highland Park and University Park. Highland Park is the center of Dallas socialite activities. Good luck finding a home in Highland Park for under $1 Million. The homes, while crammed next to each other like sardines, are opulent in acutriments and historical architecture. Much new construction is underway as new folks move in and refurbish old homes that can be purchased for a meager $656 per square foot as opposed to luxury homes in other upscale Dallas neighborhoods going for $143 per square foot.

University Park - A sister city to Highland Park, University Park has all of the social pomp, without the high price. This area surrounds Southern Methodist University (SMU) and Highland Park Village on Mockingbird Lane. In University Park, you can rub elbows with the attorneys, investment bankers and real estate moguls of DFW.

Preston Hollow - Nestled between Preston Road and Forest, Preston Hollow is another sought-after Dallas socialite community. This area has been heavily rebuilt. Old houses are being demolished and new homes are cropping up, faster than you can say "humongous lots." The wealthy inhabitants of this area enjoy the world famous Cooper Aerobics Center and the kiddos attend St. Marks Academy, Hockaday and Ursuline Acadamy.

Turtle Creek - Highrises abound along the picturesque landscape of Turtle Creek Boulevard, located on the edge of Highland Park and Downtown Dallas. This area is ripe with retirees disinterested in tending to huge yards, young executives ready to party at newly hip Dallas hotspots.

Kessler Park - This neighborhood is tough to get into as the old guard still reigns supreme. It might not matter to you anyway, as the old mansion-style homes are old as methuselah and are sure to have issues.

So, if you're looking for prestige, you know where to go in Dallas, Texas. Highland Park, University Park, Preston Hollow, Turtle Creek and Kessler Park offer all you need in shopping, socializing and soirees. If this type of life doesn't tilt your hat, you can always join the rest of us to north, south, east or west of Big "D."

Austin Real Estate Outlook

Recent headlines suggest that home sales could be on the rise in some parts of the country, particularly in the South and Midwest. While analyst are being cautious not to sound too optimistic, the number of pending sales in December was up 6.3 percent according to the National Association of Realtors. This increase was largely credited to falling prices along with lower mortgage rates.

Austin home prices are actually on the rise, according to the most recent housing statistics from Yahoo. The median price for a home in Austin is currently $299,000, a 3.1 percent increase over January. While this may not be good news for bargain hunters, it was a positive sign that the housing market is still doing well in Central Texas.

Zillow shows that overall home values in the Austin area were down 3.6 percent at the end of last year, a sudden change after a steady climb in prices over the last three years. The stock market collapse last fall caused home values across the country to plunge in November and December of 2008. This was also the case in Austin, making the numbers in the local housing market look dire for the first time in years.

In other parts of the country the numbers at the end of last year were much worse. Boston home values were down 9.6 percent, while Santa Barbara, CA values were down 21.5 percent. While the housing crisis has been felt across the nation, the pain has certainly been deeper is some cities.

Lower new home starts and less inventory on the market both contribute to the better numbers in housing markets across the country. A recent Associated Press article noted that pending home sales were up in the South and Midwest, but fell 2-4 percent in other parts of the country. Finding the good news in the economy all depends on where one looks.

The vote this week to give a tax break to home buyers should be good news across the country. The new bill would provide a tax credit of 10 percent of the value of a residence, up to $15,000. This is an increase over the current $7,500 credit, which applied only to first time buyers. This amendment to the economic stimulus package being hammered out in Congress would apply to any home buyer of a primary residence this year. The hope is that this tax incentive will encourage banks to make loans thus stimulating the housing market with new buyers.

According to Senator Isakson, R-GA, who pushed hard for the tax credit, it will help the housing industry and the economy. A statement on Isakson's website says, "In the mid-1970s, America faced a similar housing crisis when a period of easy credit and loose underwriting flooded the market with new construction. Interest rates rose, the economy slowed and America was left with a three-year supply of vacant homes. Congress responded by passing a $2,000 tax credit for anyone purchasing a new home for their principal residence. Isakson believes the results were clear and swift as home values stabilized, housing inventory dropped and the market recovered." All of this can only be good news for the Austin housing market.

Protect Your Home From Prowlers

Christmas is a time for family reunions, parties, and fun. It's also the time when prowlers and other criminal elements are most likely to strike.

Indeed, the holidays can be a perfect opportunity for robbers, swindlers, and other con men to ply their trade. If you're not careful, you could end up as their next victim, leaving you angry, frustrated, and full of ugly wrinkles!

To enjoy Christmas and protect your investment, here are some friendly reminders from popular anti-wrinkle fighter Dermaxin - the safe and natural way to preserve your youthful looks. Dermaxin penetrates the skin quickly to deliver dramatic and visible results.

Lock all doors at all times. The windows should be open just enough to allow fresh air, not burglars, to enter.

Instruct house help not to entertain or allow strangers inside the house.

When somebody knocks, verify his identity before unlocking your door. Peepholes are very helpful for this purpose.

When it is a repairman, serviceman or electrical inspector, carefully verify his identity. When in doubt, call the office.

Do not admit strangers under any circumstances. If transactions are made, make them at the door. This prevents would-be robbers from observing the contents and plan of your house.

Cash and valuables are better deposited in banks.

Don't leave door keys in flower pots, under doormats or in the mailbox.

If possible, leave a light open at night to discourage the approach and entry of robbers.

Don't leave bicycles, your garden hose, and other valuable things scattered in the yard. These could invite thieves.

Use drapes or curtains in windows. They keep valuable things like your radio, TV set, and appliances out of the sight of robbers.

Record descriptions, makes, and serial numbers of your appliances so they can easily be identified if case they are stolen.

Before retiring at night, see to it that all doors and windows are properly secured.

When going on a vacation, request a trusted neighbor to look after your house and to call the police if anything unusual happens.

If robbers enter your home, try to quietly call the police. If you can, get out of the house and raise an alarm from a safe distance.

Home Inspection Services - Should You Get a Home Inspection When Buying?

Home inspection services can help ease the confusion and stress of buying a house. When you are buying a residence there are things that you can choose like the price range and location. But whether you are planning to get a new place or an existing one, you still have to worry about the unknown. Especially - does it have any problems that could be very costly later down the road?

Knowing if there are any problems before you purchase can be very beneficial to both your finances and the safety of your family. You can definitely find out if there are any problems by hiring a professional home inspector. Their services should provide you with a professional assessment. It should be an unbiased review of the condition of the building.

You will receive an expert evaluation and a thorough report about the condition of the dwelling, the physical structure and various systems within it. Before a thorough report is prepared, the inspector will perform a visual inspection of the house. A good company will want you to attend and go with them during the process.

You should ask questions to help you become familiar with the house. You should be encouraged to ask any questions that you see fit during the walk-through. Your questions should be answered in a clear and concise way so you can understand the information. Make sure that the review includes foundation walls, framing, the roof and attic, the electrical system, heating and air conditioning systems, all bathrooms, the kitchen and the plumbing system. Depending on the square footage, this will take anywhere from three to five hours to complete.

An experienced person will look out for leaks and moisture where black mold could be growing. Black mold can be hazardous to your health. Once the evaluation is complete the inspector will explain to you in detail and discuss any problems that he or she has discovered. Your report should include all this information along with pictures so that it will help you with any decisions you need to make about requesting repairs.

You should also be informed of any routine maintenance that should be performed. If you have questions about maintenance, ask the company representative any questions you may have.

The company that you decide to use should be trained and certified. Many states do not require any kind of training, licensing or certification. In Chicago, a license is required but it is very easy to obtain. Instead, check to see if they are certified by an independent organization such as the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI).

Do not be afraid to ask for proof that their people are trained and certified. If they will not guarantee their work, hire someone different.

This is likely to be the largest purchase you will ever make. Properly done, these services should provide you with peace of mind about your new investment. The cost is minimal compared to the price of your purchase. And it is worth every penny because your investment is protected by hiring an experienced, professional home inspection company.

How to Build a Log Cabin

It doesn't take a genius to build a log cabin home. The rustic appeal of a log cabin lies buried in the hearts of many people and this dream can be turned into a reality with a decent set of floor plans, a little hard work, perseverance and a good set of tools.

Step by Step Procedure

A step-by-step procedure makes it a relatively easy process to build a simple log cabin and ensures you won't miss any essential steps along the way.

1. Floor Plans - A decent set of floor plans can be purchased on the internet or you can have these drawn up for you by your local architect or builder. Be certain to include all the basics a log cabin home would have that make such a dwelling unique.

2. Location, Location, Location - As in real estate investing, this mantra is paramount for the enjoyment of your future home. Choose the view that suits you. Site your log cabin on land that drains well and ideally is level. Clear the land of trees, brush and rocks leaving those that you may wish to use in the construction of your new home.

3. Preparation - Construction begins with the purchase, placing and assembling of materials on-site. You will need all the necessities of home plus any amenities that will make your log cabin unique and express your personality so that you will derive complete fulfillment from your new home.

4. Construction - Generally, the construction process is the longest and most tedious stage of building a home. It can also be the most frustrating and most expensive as delays are encountered, obstacles are mastered and changes are incorporated into your design. Even Mother Nature may seem to be against you at times. But bearing through it all will be worth it as your home is finally ready for you to move in.

5. Move-In and Personalization - As you move in, personalize your log cabin with unique touches that exemplify your style, taste and personality and present you and your guests with a pleasant and comfortable home. Fireplaces, floor rugs, pictures, trophies, hunting memorabilia can all give your log cabin a special, comforting touch.

How Much Does It Cost to Build a Log Cabin?

Log cabin homes have traditionally cost less to build than homes of other types as construction materials and labor costs are often less - often by as much as 1/3. This reduced cost can be offset however by increased expenses in location, problems with access and siting requirements. Be sure to investigate local building codes and requirements before beginning any construction.

Alternative:

Log Cabin Homes for Sale: Is building a log cabin home too much? You can always buy one. The logistics of design, location and building can be overwhelming to many people so buying a cabin could be the best option for you.

Pre-Built Log Cabin Homes: These pre-fab log cabins come partially assembled with final assembly completed on-site. Combining some of the features of building your own along with the ease of buying a cabin, this could be your best alternative.

Fitting a Shower Into Your Tiny Bathroom

People who live in urban apartments or old houses can face problems with installing a shower into their bathrooms. Most of these bathrooms are extremely small, and it may seem that since all the space is already taken up by existing fixtures, there's no hope of ever having a shower. However, there are options available to give you that shower you want.

The first thing you could try is taking the bathtub completely out. In most of these types of accommodations, the bathtubs are old, large, and take up way more room than they need to. By removing this old tub, you'll have the room you need to fit a fancy shower enclosure in the space instead. Unfortunately, this means no more long hot baths, but if you want to create more space, this may be your only option.

Before replacing your bathtub you need to realize that removing the tub will decrease the value of your property. Most potential buyers will expect there to be a bathtub. If you have a very large bedroom, you might consider adding a sunken bathtub to the bedroom in addition to adding the shower. You'll find that a lot of people will really like this idea.

Maybe you have one of those nifty old claw foot bathtubs that are so in demand today. If you have sufficient ceiling height, you can add a showerhead to your bathtub. If you don't have the height to work with, you can find shower heads on flexible hoses that you can attach to the faucet of your bathtub.

You might decide to forget the shower enclosure and the bathtub and just turn your entire bathroom into a shower. You will need to install walls and floors made of concrete or stone which could be rather costly, but the results will be truly amazing. Just be sure to add a floor drain. The problem with this kind of design may be where you're going to put a toilet, sink, and mirror. If there's room, you could put up a glass or Plexiglas partition and place your other fixtures behind the wall.

The more things you're able to remove from your small bathroom will mean you have that much more additional room for a fancy shower. When you get to doing remodeling of this scope, you will probably need to find a professional contractor to do the work for you.

10 Tips For Green Renovating

After price and location, surveys are now finding that energy efficient features are the next most important features to buyers. Even if you are not selling in the near future, improving your home's "green" ranking can save you money on energy costs and help save the planet.

There are many things you can do to increase your home's environmental friendliness. Some have small price tags and some are larger renos. Here are 5 small and 5 large projects to make your home more green.

Small Projects

  1. Replace your thermostat with a programmable one. Preferably get one that has settings for the week and weekend -- known as 5-2 or 5-1-1 programs.
  2. Replace old light bulbs with energy-saving bulbs. They come in a variety of sizes and styles for most applications.
  3. Paint with low-VOC or no-VOC paints. Volatile Organic Compounds can be released into your home for years after painting. Eco-friendly products improves the air quality for everyone living in the home.
  4. Get low flow taps or faucet aerators for your fixtures to reduce the water going down the drain.
  5. Caulk and weather seal around doors and windows to reduce drafts. You can get specialty gaskets to install behind electrical outlet covers also.

Large Projects

  1. If you are upgrading systems, go with Energy Star rated products. Appliances, heating and cooling systems, hot water tanks, windows, and more can be found that reduce energy loss and save you money.
  2. Upgrade your heating and cooling using geothermal, solar, or wind power to run your system.
  3. Replace toilets with dual flush or low-flow toilets (6L). These can save tens of thousands of litres of water per year per toilet.
  4. Increase your insulation in areas like your attic, crawlspace, and basement.
  5. Increase the insulation in your exterior walls. This is a major source of energy loss in older homes.

In Canada, you can get a pre-retrofit evaluation for your home from certain companies in order to qualify for the federal ecoENERGY grant. You will be provided with a report with recommendations for improving your home's energy rating. After performing the retrofits, you can get a post-retrofit evaluation, which will then determine what sort of rebate you are able to receive, up to $5,000. Most provinces are also offering other rebates or grants.

If you are looking for the windows that will save you thousands on bills then your best type should be one that does a good job at energy saving. There are many brands like Amerimax but the best way to find one that will work for you is to use ratings. The best rating methods that are available today are the NFCR and the Energy star rating.

Durability

If you are planning to stay in that house for a long time then you probably are thinking about finding the best type of replacement windows that are durable. Well there are many brands that feature here - a few that comes to mind include Pella, Andersons, milgard to name a few. In previous articles I have written about top brands in terms if durability.

Storm Windows

To find the best type of windows that resist wind you need to find AAMA air infiltration rating or NFRC, which I highlighted earlier on. So if you are looking for the best type of storm replacement windows then think along wooden windows because they can easily be repaired.

Vinyl storm windows tend to get messed up pretty quickly. They then start leaking and get an ugly look that cheapens the house. Of course there are other options to explore here. Brands to consider here include Hurd, Marvin or Amerimax to name just a few.

Part of the house

Different windows work are good for different parts of the house. For example when talking about the best type of kitchen replacement windows then you need to think along casement windows. This is because kitchen windows must be airy. For the lounge you may need to consider bay windows and you can get yourself Milgard Vinyl for the back areas of the house

You also need to consider the best type of replacement windows that work well when cleaning e.g. tilt-in, double hung and if you want to take out the sashes and frames then your best type may be a full frame replacement window.

My point here is that "best" is different from one person to the next. As an expert I would recommend that you get in touch with a consultant to help you find the one suitable for you. It is easy to find help online without being charged anything.

Energy Saving Tips

Astonishingly, Americans generally spend $1600 or more a year on their utility bills. Not only is much of this wasted energy, but more carbon dioxide is emitted into the air from one home than two average cars. The following tips will help you save energy costs both at home and in the car.

*Set your thermostat comfortably low in the winter and comfortably high in the summer. Install a programmable thermostat that is compatible with your heating and cooling system.

* Use compact fluorescent light bulbs.

* Air dry dishes instead of using your dishwasher's drying cycle.

* Turn off your computer and monitor when not in use.

* Plug home electronics, such as TVs and DVD players, into power strips; turn the power strips off when the equipment is not in use (TVs and DVDs in standby mode still use several watts of power).

* Lower the thermostat on your hot water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

* Take short showers instead of baths.

* Wash only full loads of dishes and clothes.

* Drive sensibly. Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) wastes gasoline.

* Look for the ENERGY STAR label on home appliances and products. ENERGY STAR products meet strict efficiency guidelines set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the United States Department of Energy.

Energy Auditing Tips:

* Check the insulation levels in your attic, exterior and basement walls, ceilings, floors, and crawl spaces.

* Check for holes or cracks around your walls, ceilings, windows, doors, light and plumbing fixtures, switches, and electrical outlets that can leak air into or out of your home.

* Check for open fireplace dampers.

* Make sure your appliances and heating and cooling systems are properly maintained. Check your owner's manual for the recommended maintenance.

* Study your family's lighting needs and use patterns, paying special attention to high-use areas such as the living room, kitchen, and outside lighting. Look for ways to use lighting controls - like occupancy sensors, dimmers, or timers - to reduce lighting energy use, and replace standard light bulbs and fixtures with compact or standard fluorescent lamps.

Insulation Tips

* Consider factors such as your climate, building design, and budget when selecting insulation R-values for your home.

* Use higher density insulation, such as rigid foam boards, in cathedral ceilings and on exterior walls.

* Ventilation plays a large role in providing moisture control and reducing summer cooling bills. Attic vents can be installed along the entire ceiling cavity to help ensure proper airflow.

* Recessed light fixtures can be a major source of heat loss, but you need to be careful how close you place insulation next to a fixture unless it is marked IC.

These tips, and more, are provided to you in a larger PDF file by the US Department of Energy.

Free Bathroom Remodeling Ideas

Instead of paying through the nose for a designer bathroom why not design it yourself? Designing your bathroom yourself isn't difficult, it could save you a lot of money and it's very satisfying. Here are some ideas that will give you a head start.

Measure your bathroom and draw it to scale

The first thing you should do is measure and draw out your existing bathroom on a sheet of squared paper. Try to be as accurate as you can because every inch might count depending on what you want to get in your new bathroom and how much space you have to play with.

Measure the distance between opposite walls on both sides of the room in case the room is wider at one end than the other. Measure floor to ceiling and the position and size of windows including the depth of the window. Also measure the size, position and shape of any irregularities in the room such as pipework.

Draw plans of your bathroom looking down from the ceiling and looking directly at each wall. When you've finished you should have five drawings on squared paper and a set of measurements to go with it. Take these, together with a tape measure, with you wherever you go because you will need to refer to then often.

Don't start by looking in magazines and bathroom showrooms

Magazines and showrooms are trying to sell you something and they will naturally go out of their way to show things in the most appealing way, which may not always be the most practical or realistic way for you. You will be using these resources of course but leave them until you have a better idea of what it is you want in your new bathroom design.

Use a digital camera

Take a digital camera with you wherever you go and use it to record everything you see. Make a note of what each image is about and carefully file it away on your computer for later reference. You will be amazed how useful this technique can be and most people don't think of doing it.

Visit your friends

Your friends are often the best resource for bathroom remodeling ideas that you have available to you. Go and visit each and every one of your friends and ask them if you can take a good look at their bathroom. Most people are more than happy to oblige especially if they have recently had their bathroom rebuilt.

Dont be afraid to ask questions about what they like and what they don't like in their bathroom. Make a note of designs that you like and where you saw them so that you can refer to them later.

Most people will either have remodeled their bathroom in the last few years or know of someone who has. If your friend knows of someone with a new bathroom ask them if they can arrange for you to go and see it. The more you see the better.

Use real estate agents to view bathrooms in houses for sale

Visit the real estate agents in your area and ask them to show you properties with new or nearly new bathrooms. They will be only too pleased to do it for you and you will end up getting a lot of ideas from this. Don't mention to the agent why you are doing it, just tell them that you want to live in a property with a great bathroom.

Some people might feel uneasy doing this but don't be because I think that it's a great way to get fresh ideas to design your new bathroom with and it might be more in the agents interest than you think. I've known people do this and end up buying one of the properties that they viewed because they loved the bathroom and realised that it would be much easier and cost effective to move instead of remodel their own bathroom.

Buy some magazines

Go down to the newsagent and pick up a few magazines on home improvement and bathrooms remodeling. Now that you have an idea of what you are looking for you will be able get most benefit from the articles, adverts and glossy photographs.

Visit showrooms

When you have a good idea of what it is you want and how you want your bathroom to look you can go visit all the showrooms. Look for items that would fit with your ideas and make a note of them. Don't forget to take digital pictures too; they will all help when you come to make buying decisions.

Pick up brochures on home improvement and bathroom remodeling

Always pick up as many brochures as you can find when touring the showrooms. Circle the items that you are interested in and make sure you write down prices and thoughts that you have at the time.

Use the Internet

Last but not least, make full use of the Internet to find product specifications, contractors and ideas on web sites like this one How to get inspiration and plan your bathroom remodeling idea

Have fun remodeling your bathroom.

Fence Building Ideas

What if I told you where to get the ultimate fence building Encyclopedia? Better yet, what if I told you, you could get it for under $20? If you're building a standard 1 x 6 dogeared fence, that's 6 foot tall and made from wood, with 4x4 post cemented into the ground, this book might not interest you, but if you're thinking about building a fence, that will make all your neighbors jealous, you might be interested in the "Fence Building Bible."

If you're interested in using your imagination, along with some of the information in this fence building Encyclopedia, if you're interested in creating a masterpiece, instead of just another barrier that divides the property, you had better think seriously about, either running down to your local library and checking the book out, or purchasing the book, so that you have it on hand when needed.

Here's a quote from the product description that could be helpful, "Beneke suggests the appropriate types of fence to keep the swimming pool secure, con fine the livestock, keep deer away from the garden, or create outdoor living spaces. He then discusses the essentials of proper fence design and provides step-by-step illustrated instructions for planning, building, maintaining, and repairing any style of fence."

If you're planning on building a fence to keep livestock, it would be extremely helpful to know what kind of fence will be necessary to keep pigs or cows separated from the other animals, including you. There's nothing worse than building a new fence, putting some large cattle inside of it and having them tear it apart and escape.

The fence building Bible as simple instructions, with lots of illustrations, to give you plenty of ideas. There's a good chance that you will see a fence in this book that you have never seen before. If you're thinking about building something out of the ordinary, I would suggest strongly, that find this book.

Greg Vanden Berge is working on the internet to promote the education for creating simple to follow guides and home building books to help professional building contractors as well as the weekend warriors.

Renovating an Attic

If you want to do remodeling on your house, you're probably aware that the space that you can work with is quite limited. When you have a small house, there are methods out there that you can use to make it seem like it's bigger. In some cases, renovating and remodeling the attic can be the answer to this problem.

If you want some extra space to live in, storage spaces like the attic are the perfect place to start from. You can turn that attic into a playroom, a bedroom, a library, an office or a gym.

Checking the amount of space that you can convert should be the first thing you do at the beginning of your project. If you want to avoid getting bruises and bumps to your head, you should make sure that all walls have a minimum height that will allow you to walk around freely.

When the wall height isn't big enough, you have the option to convert the roof into an upward slope, or to change it and make it a gable roof.

If your house is too old, you might want to consider strengthening the joists of the ceiling. These joists will take the role of supporting the extra weight that you put in the attic, like TV's, beds, couches or anything else you might want to put there.

Renovating and remodeling your attic also means that you should make sure that the ventilation, insulation and lighting are properly designed into the plan. Add extra layers to make sure that the temperature is good and the insulation appropriate. Air ducts might be another good idea if you want the temperature to be controlled. Adding windows and maybe a skylight can take care of the lighting in the room, while also decreasing your electric bill.

If you want to add a bathroom in that space, make sure you connect it to the source that is closest.

Something else that needs addressed is how easy it is to access the attic, and that is done best by installing a staircase. In the case of a staircase that is straight, its size should be 3 by 16 feet. If you choose a staircase that is in spiral, the diameter should be 5 feet. Using a ladder is not allowed if you're putting a bedroom in the attic, but if you're making a loft it's OK.

Talk with an architect or with the building inspector if you're not entirely sure if the renovation or remodeling of the attic is possible. If it can be done, start doing the plans for it and go to a contractor when it comes time to actually do it.

Finding a good contractor means that you should contact a few of them. Try comparing the rates, while also checking out their history and background. The good contractors need to have people that are licensed to do the job. If their client history is good and they have insurance, you should put them on your shortlist.

Because you're renovating or remodeling such a small part of your house, the costs shouldn't be too large. When you're done with the renovation, you will see how right you were to do it and how much better it looks.

How to Attach a Zinc Frame to Stained Glass

A zinc frame on stained glass panels is essential for structure and rigidity. The zinc frame is added once the design is cut, foiled and soldered. The process of adding a zinc frame is accomplished by following seven steps.

  1. First, measure the length of zinc came needed for each side.
  2. Then, decide if you want straight cuts or mitered cuts for the corners.
  3. Using a came saw or a fine tooth hack saw, cut the zinc came to the length and angle you need. Initially, you may want to cut the pieces long then re-cut once you dry fit the came to the stained glass piece.
  4. Once you have all the zinc came cut and fitted to your piece, insert the glass into the came channels and hold zinc in place using t-pins. If you are using Handy Hangers, you would insert them into the came corners during this step.
  5. Now flux the corners of the came frame and all the solder seams that touch the frame
  6. Then, solder each joint of the frame and the adjacent solder seams.
  7. Once, the first side is done, carefully turn the piece over and repeat the process on that side.

To apply hanging rings to the zinc frame, lightly flux the ring and the area of the frame where the ring will be attached. The area in which you attach the rings should be where the zinc frame meets a solder seam. Next, solder the rings to the zinc frame. Be sure the ring extends over the edge of the frame. If you are going to add a wood frame to the stained glass piece do not attach rings to the zinc frame.

Hanging rings can be purchased or easily made by using copper or silver wire. To make your own hanging rings, wrap wire around a pencil or other object to get the diameter you need. Then simply cut it, making a small circle. If you need stronger rings, cut two or three lengths of wire and twist them together. The twisting can be done easily by placing one end of the strands in a vice and the other end into the chuck of a drill. Rotate slowly until the desired amount of twisting is completed. Then wrap the twisted wire around a pencil or other object and cut.

After zinc frame is attached, be sure to use flux remover and remove all flux residue.

Some areas of concern:

Please note that zinc frames are available in different sizes, widths. Each one, however, laps over the edge of the glass the same amount. So, the only reason for going to a larger width is looks. Additional strength may be gathered if your stained glass piece is extremely large. Any piece over 30" wide or tall should definitely be framed in the largest size zinc frame available.

Mitered cuts look better in my opinion, especially if you are not using a wood frame. Actually miter cuts are not that much harder to accomplish, so why not be professional in the first place? Small electrical frame cutters, 2" blade, are available for around $20. This is worth it in my opinion.

When mounting frame on your art work, be sure that all edges of the glass are secured into the full depth of the zinc frame. Otherwise, you will experience dissatisfaction after you solder the pieces together. As mentioned, T-pins are suggested to be sure and hold the frame tightly anchored to edge of the glass and deep into the channel of the zinc frame.

When soldering the corners or the seam lines connecting the frame, you will see a slight rise to the solder. It is common to see the actual solder at these points, but after patina is applied, these blend together and look fine. Be careful as to not build up too much solder at these locations or this may be highly visible when finished.

After soldering the first side and then turning the art work over to solder the second side, examine the frame to see that it is in the correct position before soldering. Sometimes it can get "adjusted" when you turn the piece over.

I highly suggest the using hanging rings that have been twisted together as these are much stronger and tend not to pull apart after the art work has been hanging for some time. I have experienced single wire hooks actually failing and a piece or two has dropped and broken. Save yourself grief (take it from me) and only use the twisted, therefore stronger hanging rings.

If using a wood frame, a better look is always produced by mitering the corners of the wood. Simple 45 degree cuts on the end of all frame members easily accomplish this. When mechanically attaching these pieces of frame, I strongly suggest the use of a good carpenter's glue and one screw for long term hanging safety. Additionally, wood frames come in all sizes, including width, thickness and specie of wood. Decide how you want to finish them, paint or stain. This will enable you to use the right wood for the right job and not end up painting oak wood. Oak is too expensive and beautiful to hide under paint in my opinion. Mechanical hanging fasteners that include screws into the wood should be used.

I started out as a stained glass admirer. After a class in stained glass, I became addicted. At first I made stained glass to decorate my homes, which lead to friends asking me to make stained glass for them. Now I am a full time professional making stained glass as well as instructing others on how to make stained glass. My studio is located outside of Chicago, Illinois. Tips For Dryer Maintenance

The MOST important maintenance for any dryer is a clear exhaust. The shorter the venting run with the least amount of 90 degree turns, the better the performance of the dryer will be. Improperly maintained dryer vent systems can cause premature failure of some of the inner components of the dryer as well as pose a fire safety risk.

For the best drying results, clean the lint filter before beginning each load. If you use dryer sheets, periodically take a soft bristle brush and gently clean the screen with hot soapy water. Over time the sheets leave a waxy film that clogs the screen and prevents good air flow. You may not be able to see this residue well but you can test this by simply running water over the screen to see if it flows through or beads on top.

If you decide to run a cycle with just a few items inside of the drum, toss in a few other items of varying size to promote good tumbling. Dryers with an Auto-Dry cycle will not dry properly with a very small load because of the difficulty of the clothing items making consistent contact with the wetness sensors.

Never use the white plastic exhaust duct on any dryer. This is the inexpensive venting that can be found at many hardware stores. They are not recommended because they create a fire hazard from the plastic materials propensity to attract lint. Over time this lint buildup will clog the vent and force lint to accumulate in the interior of the dryer near the burner tunnel. Try to only use the flexible metal duct or rigid duct that can be purchased from a home improvement or appliance store.

Improper venting or a clogged vent will give the following results:

1. Long dry times
2. Clothes still hot and damp after cycle ends
3. Premature failure of the safety thermostat (often when this thermostat fails, the dryer will not turn on at all)

Venting dryers indoors is strongly discouraged because of the combination of moisture and heat that can produce mold resulting in chronic illness and respiratory problems. Also, the drying time will be extended as the dryer pulls this warm moist air back inside instead of dry air.

Outdoor Shed Foundations - Home Building Tips

When looking to build your own outdoor shed the first place to start is with the shed foundation. Your storage shed needs to be built on a strong foundation. Whether it is wood or concrete your slab needs to be a firm base that your outdoor shed will be built on. If you don't have a good shed foundation then your shed will not last as long as it should.

Wondering when to use a concrete slab or wood for a shed foundation? Here are the two main reasons for choosing one or the other. A wood foundation for your outdoor shed will allow you to move it if you ever decide that your original spot is not right. If you use a concrete slap then you will not be able to move it at all.

After you figured out what type of foundation you want you need to start to assemble it. If you're going to use the wood foundation, make sure you use pressure treated wood. Any home improvement store will have it just make sure to ask for help if you're unsure of the type and size you need. Tell them you're building an outdoor shed and they will be able to point you in the right direction.

An easy way to build a nice strong shed foundation is to get a couple of skids. These can be found at just about any store and usually they are in the back and free. Lay the skids out and placing your pressure treated wood around the outside nail then together. Using 3/4" plywood for the floor will give your outdoor shed a very strong foundation. Using bricks under the skids will help level the shed floor off and also keep any moisture from getting into our wood foundation.

If you decide to use the concrete slab make sure you have picked out the correct location, as this will be a permanent structure on your property. If you need your outdoor shed to support a lot of heavy equipment then you want to use the concrete slab foundation. It will be able to hold a lot more weight than the wood foundation.

It's always best to have a plan of attack before starting any home improvement project: it can save you time and money. Think about what you plan to keep inside your outdoor shed, if its going to be heavy equipment and you know that the wood foundation is going to be raised up off the ground 5-8" you may need a ramp to get stuff in and out. A concrete foundation can be made to be ground level. Keeping all these things in mind before you start building your outdoor shed will make this go so much faster and give you less headaches.

Plumbing Repair Advice from a Professional Contractor

If you've owned a home for over 20 years, there's a very good chance, that you've had a water pipe break, a drainpipe clogged, a toilet that wouldn't flush right, or a water leak that damaged part of the home. If you don't know, what you're looking for and you have no idea what damage can be done, over time, this could mean trouble for the homeowner.

Plumbing problems like these have been around and will be around for many years. Knowing what to do about them, how to repair them and what materials will be needed, can be found in plumbing repair manuals for books. How would you like to have a professional plumber to advise you on your plumbing repairs. What if I told you that you could have a plumbing professional on hand at all times. Is this something that you might be interested in.

Well I can't guarantee that, so let's forget about what I just said and go to the next best thing. Plumbing repair manuals are full of tips and advice that when needed can sometimes be priceless. If water is leaking from the ceiling in your home and you have no idea, where the water is coming from or how to stop it from leaking, any information could be priceless and I mean priceless.

Plumbers, usually charge over $100 an hour for emergency service. I've seen plumbers come to peoples homes, turn the water off to the house, stop the water from leaking and now it is no longer an emergency. The plumber quickly pulls out an invoice for the plumbing repairs and it could be over $1000, if you decide that this is ridiculous and choose not to pay it, the plumber can hand you a bill for stopping the water leak. Some of these bills are what I would consider quite ridiculous, for just shutting the water off.

You're not paying the plumber for the amount of time it took him, you're paying him for his knowledge. If you knew where to shut the water off, you wouldn't have an emergency situation and could contact a plumber during normal hours. This could save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

With a simple home repair manual or a home plumbing book, you could prepare yourself for a situation like this and other plumbing problems. Most home repair manuals have general solutions and advice and can solve most of the problems around your home. If they can't solve all of the problems, they can probably save you from major catastrophes like a water leak.

Most of the time it's not the water leak that will cost the most money, it's the damage the water will do to your furniture, carpeting, wood flooring, walls or ceilings. A little information and preparation can save you a lot of money in the long run.

Create Personal Calm and Peace Using Feng Shui Principles

According to advertising experts, the average person is bombarded, even assaulted by more than 4000 impressions daily in the form of print, email, voice mail, radio, television and blaring advertisements. Additionally, you are constantly attacked with negative energy about the housing crisis and the economy in the daily news plus sound bites about Iraq, Iran and Russia's threats, home grown terrorists and nature's devastation as experienced through recent flooding and eminent hurricanes.

Does this assault on your senses totally unbalance your peace of mind and create jangled nerves? It did for Carol, a mom of two teens who worked part-time to help meet the family's ever increasing expenses. She contacted me saying, "I've had it; I cannot stand one more day of so much negative energy in my life. I am feeling anxious, I am yelling at the children and I can't concentrate at work." She wanted help on ways to lessen the impact of the daily barrage of negative information and to bring more positive supportive energy into her world.

It takes a lot of positive energy to deal with all of the negatives that surround Carol on a daily basis. Most people use up more energy every day than they create just by doing their daily routines at work or at home, dealing with health issues, driving in traffic and dealing with people. So, when they are faced head on with the additional stress of the constant negative news cycle and something major like a hurricane or flood they have little energy in reserve to carry them through to maintain calm and stay in control.

Energy Boost Options

Feng Shui is all about increasing the positive energy in your world to bring about desired results. In this case it's about building up a positive energy reserve for times of need by reducing chaos and stress causing anxiety and replacing it with calm and staying in control. What follows are several things I recommended to Carol that you can do in your home to help you and your family eliminate some of the negative energy attacks and provide you energy reserves.

Limit your online and print reading plus television viewing of negative news items to one hour per day. Choose the best time for you to spend that hour based on your schedule but definitely do not view the news cycle just before bedtime. The last thing you hear or see before going to sleep is what your subconscious mind will focus on all night creating restless sleep. Always view or read something relaxing or uplifting before retiring at night.

Believe that you are in control of your world instead of outside circumstances and surroundings controlling you by increasing your positive energy. Repeating to yourself three times every morning "I am in control of my world" will automatically increase your personal positive energy. If all members of your family do the same, the feelings of negative energy like helplessness and being a victim will be overcome with positive energy in control thinking.

Listen to really upbeat music to boost positive energy in your world; music that stirs the heart and soul and makes energy surge to the surface of your life. For some people ethnic music works great, others use really robust music like marches or a rousing version of the 1812 overture. For some, even great patriotic music does wonders. The choice is up to you. This really works to motivate you and bring energy into your life. This type of music will definitely energize and stimulate you and is best listened to early in the day or on your way to work. Do not listen to such music before bedtime or you will be mentally active all night.

Create a "self energizing center" in your home. Put aside a small area in a spare bedroom, the den or sun room which is used just to spend time in alone for 10 to 15 minutes two or three times per week for regenerating you. When in this little private area, let other family members know that you are not to be disturbed. This should be a quiet zone where you can listen to peaceful music, read an inspiring book, write in your journal, meditate or simply stare out the window and let your mind and body rest. Place a green candle in this area in a safe container and light it to help you focus on self energizing. Carefully extinguish the candle when you are finished. You will feel uniquely refreshed and ready to face what lies ahead. This technique is very useful near or at the end of the day as it brings peace and quiet to your mind.

As Carol found out, people today are faced with far too many negative energy issues, bombarded with numerous activities and have to focus on many tense events. Yet, they never take time to simply listen to their bodies and give themselves much needed rest for regeneration.

In order to have the reserve energy needed to deal with the daily assault of negative information plus catastrophic events like floods and hurricanes, our bodies and minds need to generate more energy than we use up every day. Carol found that following the techniques above significantly decreased the anxiety she was experiencing. She also found that by creating a reserve of positive energy she was more capable of dealing with stressful times and less anxious.

Don't just survive the bombardment of negative news cycles and threats from the weather and information abroad, thrive by enlarging the positive supportive energy in your world so you can maintain calm on the outside and peace within.

Advantages Of Using A Sump Pump Cover

Eighty five percent of homes in the US experience a flooded basement sooner or later - these are the estimates from home builders and insurance providers.

The sump pump was invented to handle minor basement flooding problems, and this solution came with it's own set of new problems. Questions about safety soon arouse with this machinery open and exposed. Also, small animals could get stuck in the sump pit. Unable to escape it could clog the system, as well as cause an unpleasant mess when it came time to cleanup.

These issues, of course lead to the sump pump cover being made available.

Installing a sump pump cover gives the security and peace of mind that no one can bump, step on, or otherwise damage the unit - leaving your basement unprotected. And no foreign objects will be able to enter the sump pit causing malfunction or inefficiency.

Today, more and more systems are sold with a complete line of accessories, which includes a cover. Other sources of sump pump covers are specialty home stores that sometimes carry these items sold separately from a pump unit.

Now days, it is fairly standard for sump pumps sold in the United States to include covers. If you are outside the United States, or in need of a cover for an older installation, check the specialty home stores near you.

Safety issues

Do not be tempted to leave the cover off after any routine servicing or maintenance. The system can run just fine without it, so long as it doesn't get damaged, or objects get caught in the sump pit possibly causing failure. You will probably never even know about any such damage until you need your basement sump pump the most.

One final advantage is the dust and dirt that is kept away from the workings. Keeping this dirt away helps keep the system from overheating and ensures a long service life of your sump pump system. There's really no disadvantage to using a sump pump cover. Without one, you risk premature failure when you need your sump pump the most.

Exterior House Painting - Home Repair Advice

If the exterior of your home is beginning to look a little faded and weathered, it may be time for a paint job. It is never good to put a badly needed paint job on hold because you are risking a great deal of damage to the outside of your home.

If you are unfamiliar with exterior house painting and aren't comfortable with the steps involved in the process, it is probably a good idea to bring in a contracted painter for the job. There is a great deal of prep work and other procedures involved in an exterior house painting and a professional contracted painter will make sure that those procedures are completed to keep your home painting looking the best that it can and to ensure that your home's exterior is being protected.

One example of the prep work needed during an exterior house painting is pressure washing your home before applying the new home painting. Pressure washing will help clear your home's exterior of any debris and anything else that can negatively affect the exterior house painting. Any mildew and loose paint will also need to be taken care of before the painting is completed. These are just a few examples of the procedures involved in the project.

A home is a major investment and you probably don't want to do anything that would damage that investment. If you have been putting off a badly needed paint job however, you may be unknowingly risking damage to your home's exterior that could be easily avoided. So, when you notice that your exterior house painting is looking faded and weathered, it is probably a good idea to call your contracted painter to schedule that home painting.

How to Hire the Right Home Improvement Contractor

New York was dubbed the "City that Never Sleeps" for a good reason and that is the 24-hour hustle and bustle not only of traffic but people as well. Home improvement is an area which is increasingly gaining importance in NYC living. A very busy lifestyle, calls for a living space that would be worth coming home to no matter the size or type of residence. There may also be damages and functionality issues lurking somewhere and are only brought to the attention of the busy occupant when the damage is beyond repair. There is no doubt that in times when the need for maintenance, repair, renovation, and remodeling arises; the most ideal option for any New York City person is to get help from a home improvement contractor, but how do you hire the right one?

Good word of mouth is the best form of advertisement for every business operator and service provider, as well as the most damaging. Try to ask family members, friends, and neighbors for any recommendation. These people would be the best source for honest testimonials on the work of an NYC home improvement contractor. Be wary of names that come up when asking at some building materials store or at a local pool supply as these leads could just be among those that benefit from a finder's fee scheme.

If you have nobody trustworthy to consult to regarding this search, check with the BBB or Better Business Bureau in New York first before spending minutes and hours going through the local Yellow Pages. While at it, see the list of home improvement contractors that have bad records or unresolved complaints to their names and make sure to steer clear from them. The Internet can also be a good source of information that could lead you to the right NYC home improvement contractor. You can browse through rip-off websites or simply Google the name of the professional that you are interested in, and you are sure to find either good or bad things about him. From here, you could already draw up possible candidates who have clean records.

After going through the steps, now is high time to screen them to determine the right home improvement contractor to hire. Phone each of your picks and tell them exactly the same details and get bids. When conducting the interview, never hesitate to ask many questions especially important ones. Do not base your choice on the price given by the contractor as the cheapest is not always the most economical and the most expensive does not always end up with the highest of quality. When comparing bids, consider what the contractor plans to do and the materials that he will be using. Make sure to get references to check out and verify his license.

There are numerous benefits in acquiring the services of a New York City home improvement contractor, so much more if you did your homework and hired a competent one. The time extended on going through the selection and the dollars spent would prove to be well worth it not only after the project has been finished successfully but in the long run. Hiring the right home improvement contractor for the job helps you avoid the risks of additional costs for maintenance and back jobs.

Eugene Makeev has been in the home improvement industry for a while. His skills and expertise, which have been polished through time, are now used to help New York home owners avoid the common pitfalls in home improvements by matching their needs with the right, prescreened New York General Contractor. Lighting a Charcoal BBQ Grill Fast and Easy

The best as well as the easiest way to light charcoal briquettes is by using a charcoal chimney starter. This is an aluminum cylinder with a wooden handle on the outside and a metal shelf on the inside that separates the cylinder into to sections. The top section is about 2/3 the length of the cylinder and the bottom section is 1/3 the length of the cylinder. There are round holes surrounding the bottom 1/3 of the cylinder as well as holes inside on the shelf that separates the two sections.

To use the charcoal chimney starter, you need 2 to 3 sheets of newspaper. Wad or roll the sheets together loosely into a long cylinder. I don't wrap it too tight so that air can circulate while it is burning. Curl the the sheets into a donut shape with a hole in the center. Fit the paper donut into the bottom of the chimney starter. Try to have a few stray pieces of paper sticking out of the holes. This makes it easier to light. If you want you can use paraffin cubes either bought in the store or made out of something like a cardboard egg crate you buy your eggs in.

Fill the top section of the cylinder with charcoal. I prefer to use briquettes in the chimney starter. Lump charcoal burns too quickly. Place the chimney starter on the floor or charcoal shelf of your bbq grill and light the newspaper through the holes on the bottom of the charcoal chimney starter. The charcoal lights fairly fast and should be ready in about 15 minutes. Lump charcoal is a lot faster to start but also burns out faster, so I don't use it in the chimney starter. The charcoal is ready when you see a coating of white ash over almost all of the charcoals.

When the coals are ready, carefully poor the coals into the grill and spread them evenly around the grill bed. Remember to safely place the very hot charcoal chimney starter away from pets and children so they don't get burned. Also, don't put the hot chimney starter on the grass because it can cause a fire.

A second method to light the charcoals is with paraffin cubes bought at a store or made at home with cardboard egg crates. Place a few paraffin cubes in the middle of your grill bed or charcoal grate. Then build a pyramid of charcoal briquettes over and around the paraffin cubes. Light the cube and when all the briquettes are evenly lit and covered with ash spread them evenly out around the grill bed.

I don't like or recommend starter fluid readily available in stores. These fluids can impart a taste to the charcoal that I don't like and I prefer a more natural non chemical way to start my fire.

A chimney starter holds about 90 to 100 briquettes. This should cover 2/3 of the area of a standard 22 1/2 inch standard charcoal kettle grill like the commonly used Webber kettle grill. It is important to use the right amount of briquettes so that you get an even heat. The charcoal briquettes should extend a minimum of 4 inches in every direction beyond whatever food you are cooking. This will allow an even heat and let your food cook evenly.

Luck is What Happens When Preparation Meets Opportunity

You must be ready when an opportunity comes before you, opportunity often comes in the form of work and that's why most people seem to miss it. Most people are too busy looking for the easy path through life. They seem to lay around waiting for the opportunity of a lifetime,... to simply fall at your feet.

Why would you want to spend so much time complaining about something, or someone? Other people can help you along the way, if you let them, but it's up to you, ultimately, to become the most you can possibly be. I have had plenty of opportunities in my life and have took advantage of some, while letting most of them pass by.

I'm no different than most people but now seem to be aware of my surrounding opportunities, all the time.

How many times do you wish for an opportunity to come along? It's probably one that you missed already, at some point during your life. Are you going to be prepared for the next opportunity when it comes along? These opportunities seem to repeat themselves throughout our lives and if we're not in the right state of mind, we often overlook them and let them pass by, time and time again.

You need to prepare yourself in advance for the next opportunity. If you are prepared and have your eyes open, you will be able to see the next opportunity that comes your way. Preparation will increase your chances for success and good fortune always.

Opportunities come in all shapes and sizes. Be on the lookout, when you're walking to the grocery store, taking a break at work, reading the newspaper, talking to your neighbor, walking down the street or even while you are sitting alone, letting your mind wander away. Your chances for success could come while your in your quiet places, or relaxing. Be prepared.

Problems With New Houses - Home Building

The house you live in was probably a mass produced home built as part of a housing track. The track home is a rapidly built house in phases. These phases if possible will over lap the other home building trades. If possible you will have the plumbers working on the same house as the electricians and the framers. This is called fast tracking.

Fast tracking a house is building a home as fast as humanly possible. So you can imagine the pressures put on all of the people involved in building a track home.
The pace is so fast sometimes that I have seen job superintendents and foremen look like they were actually going to blow up. I mean explode from the pressure they where under.

Framing the stairs on the job was the same experience for me most of the time. Sometimes I had three jobs going at once. Think about it. At the most, I could only go to each of the jobs twice each week. That involved working on Saturday of course. This made a lot of framing foremen extremely upset. They had full time crews on their jobs always working five days a week. If I missed one day of work. I was behind for the rest of the job.

Now it rarely happened but if I did miss a day of work I had to make it up some how. The only way to make it up was by working late or on Sunday. Well most of the time I worked six days a week from 7:00 in the mourning until 5:00 at night. So working late meant sunrise to sunset. Oh did I mention that I did have a family. This wasn't easy for them either.

One time I got so far behind on a job that I was putting stairs in while they were roofing the houses. Talk about one unhappy foreman. I think you get the idea about the pressure I was under to install these stairs on time. My experience building stairs on track built homes taught me to build homes extremely fast while being proficient.
I'm not interested in working like that anymore. My life is simple now and I want to keep it that way. The next time you see a construction worker working late on a Saturday show some compassion. Maybe by reading this article you will understand some of the pressure he is under.

Building tract homes is hard on you mentally and physically.

Happy Home building.

Greg Vanden Berge is working on the internet to promote the education for creating simple to follow guides and home building books to help professional building contractors as well as the weekend warriors. He is currently working on more building stairs books and adding useful content to help solve problems created by the lack of construction knowledge in the building industry. Stairway Safety

Clear Approach to Conservatories

A conservatory or orangery is something of a 'must have' item for many of us today. Whether used as a garden sitting room for dining, as a playroom or just a place to relax it can be a valuable addition to any home. Whatever your preference you need to choose wisely if you want to gain extra living space that will greatly enhance the value and style of your home. The alternative can be be a leaking eyesore so it is always sensible to carefully choose quality products and service to the highest safety standards.

When it come to choosing a location there are many factors to consider, such as the amount of sunlight your new extension will receive and convenience of access. You also need a conservatory or orangery in keeping with the style of the house or garden, with double glazing windows, heating and ventilation other important considerations. Those thinking of filling the conservatory or orangery with plants may consider a water tap or maybe even a small pond or fountain.

To consider such options after your conservatory has been built is far more expensive. It is all too easy to go with the conservatory or orangery style you'll find on a glossy brochure, but find out what other styles are available in a showroom. Consider its a place where you plan to spend a lot of time, be that pottering with plants or enjoying a leisurely evening with a glass of something refreshing. Maintenance and safety of your conservatory or orangery are also important and don't ignore security.

Ensure the conservatory or orangery design does not allow glass to be removed easily. PVC doors should be lockable and consider window locks. Finally there are many finishing touches to consider for your conservatory or orangery, from the choice of flooring, lighting and window blinds.

Contact us today and discuss our Conservatory & Orangery range or if you prefer, visit our Cheshire or Lancashire showroom http://www.theconservatoryoutlet.co.uk We guarantee you won't be disappointed!
